The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) seeks experienced research consultants with an in-depth understanding of policing, violence and criminal justice in South Africa for the Justice and Violence Prevention Programme – specifically the Crime and Justice Information and Analysis Hub platform (Crime Hub).
The Crime Hub is a free South African online information portal that provides regularly updated, user-friendly access to credible information and analysis on crime, violence, and the criminal justice system in South Africa. The ISS Crime Hub presents crime and violence statistics to the public through detailed interactive maps in an accessible format. The platform's fact sheets and analytical tools enable government, civil society and the media to better understand violence and crime in South Africa, contributing to the goal of building a safer society.
Candidates must demonstrate extensive experience in criminal justice departments, stakeholder management and data analysis, along with a strong publication record. The successful candidates will report to the manager of the Crime Hub in the Justice and Violence Prevention Programme.
Key responsibilities
- Conduct research and analysis on crime and justice topics, including evidence-based policing policy, police performance and accountability
- Implement various research methodologies, including sampling and survey design
- Perform qualitative and quantitative data analysis
- Produce high-quality reports, opinion pieces, policy briefs and other publications
- Deliver presentations to high-level stakeholders and disseminate information through media platforms
- Network with senior government and non-governmental stakeholders
- Design and host online and in-person seminars and workshops
- Provide technical assistance to government and non-governmental organisations
Requirements
- Master's degree in a relevant social science discipline
- Minimum 10 years' work experience at senior management level in public policy
- Established publication record in policing and crime prevention
- Extensive media experience and interview skills
- Strong network within the criminal justice system and civil society
- Advanced project planning abilities and multi-tasking capabilities
- Proven team leadership and interpersonal skills
- Excellent English proficiency (written and verbal); additional South African language is advantageous
- Strong analytical and independent thinking skills
- Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite (Word, PowerPoint, Excel)
Contract terms: Three months starting March 2025 (7–10 days per month), with the possibility of renewal based on programme requirements, funding and performance.
