The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) is seeking a geographic information systems (GIS) specialist consultant (individual or company) for the Crime and Justice Information and Analysis Hub platform (Crime Hub) within the ISS Justice and Violence Prevention Programme.
The Crime Hub is a free South African online information portal that provides regularly updated, user-friendly access to credible information and analysis on crime, violence, and the criminal justice system in South Africa. The ISS Crime Hub presents crime and violence statistics to the public through detailed interactive maps in an accessible format. The platform's fact sheets and analytical tools enable government, civil society and the media to better understand violence and crime in South Africa, contributing to the goal of building a safer society.
The successful candidate will report to the manager of the Crime Hub in the Justice and Violence Prevention Programme.
Key responsibilities
- Develop and implement new/modified GIS products and databases
- Coordinate with website developers to ensure database compatibility
- Provide expert GIS consultation for criminal justice departments
- Implement robust GIS methodologies
- Generate crime statistics and analytical map series
- Produce high-quality reports and documentation
- Deliver technical assistance to various organizations
Requirements
- Degree in GIS or related field (advantageous)
- Minimum 5 years' experience in GIS projects, specifically with crime data
- Experience in multidisciplinary analysis (demographic, social, economic, land use)
- Proven innovation in GIS product development
- Established publication record
- Excellent English communication skills
- Strong project management abilities
- Advanced Excel and GIS software proficiency
Contract terms: 10 months starting March 2025 (approximately 100 hours total), with the possibility of renewal.
