The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) is seeking a skilled community facilitator with research, analysis and data-capturing expertise for the Justice and Violence Prevention Programme – specifically the Crime and Justice Information and Analysis Hub platform (Crime Hub).
The Crime Hub is a free South African online information portal that provides regularly updated, user-friendly access to credible information and analysis on crime, violence, and the criminal justice system in South Africa. Through detailed interactive maps, the ISS Crime Hub presents crime and violence statistics to the public in an accessible format. The platform's fact sheets and analytical tools enable government, civil society and the media to better understand violence and crime in South Africa, contributing to the goal of building a safer society.
The successful candidates will report to the manager of the Crime Hub in the Justice and Violence Prevention Programme.
Key responsibilities
- Monitor daily media sources for public violence incidents, including protests and police brutality
- Maintain and update the online Excel database with incident information
- Cross-reference information across multiple sources
- Record precise location data including addresses and GPS coordinates
- Integrate additional incident details from social media platforms
- Develop organisational templates for information capture
- Perform administrative tasks and maintain records
- Analyse protest data and document findings
- Attend community meetings, protests and government sessions as required
- Present at ISS and stakeholder events
- Handle media and stakeholder inquiries
Requirements
- Proven experience in community-level facilitation and engagement
- Minimum 5 years' experience in protest and/or violence monitoring
- Strong stakeholder management skills
- Degree in relevant social science discipline (advantageous)
- Excellent English proficiency; fluency in three or more South African languages strongly preferred
- Advanced Microsoft Office skills
- Strong analytical and independent thinking abilities
- Capacity for independent work under pressure
Contract terms: 10 months starting March 2025 (20 days per month), with possibility of renewal.
