Police stations are at the heart of police service delivery. Most officers who come into contact with the public are based at one of the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) 1 146 police stations. Successful policing therefore depends on the effective management of police stations. This is easier said than done though. Station managers respond to crime, liaise with communities, manage assets and finances, mentor and discipline staff, among many other responsibilities.

This seminar brings together South African and Bavarian station managers to discuss the challenges they face on an average day, and how they overcome them.

Chair: Dr Andrew Faull, Senior Researcher, ISS

Speakers:

Peter Breitner, Senior Chief Superintendent, Munich Station Commander, Bavarian State Police

Mr Johan Brand, Western Cape Police Ombudsman and former station commissioner for Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha

Brigadier Hansia Hansraj, Station Commander, Cape Town Central Police Station
