South Africa’s responses to corruption and organised crime focus on crisis management and enforcement. But lasting progress requires acting earlier, before bribes are offered and networks take hold. Targeted upstream measures are especially important when corruption and organised crime converge.

This seminar will explore how South Africa can get ahead of the problem. Leaders from government and business will consider how to harness the considerable power of upstream government agencies, and how data can help detect risks earlier. Speakers will discuss aligning prevention and enforcement, and collective action by business, civil society and government.

This event is co-hosted by the Institute for Security Studies (ISS) and the Special Investigating Unit (SIU).

Moderator: Ferial Haffajee, Associate Editor, Daily Maverick

  • Firoz Cachalia, Minister of Police
  • Andy Mothibi, National Director of Public Prosecutions, National Prosecuting Authority
  • Pranesh Maharaj, Chief Programme Portfolio Officer, Special Investigating Unit
